Weather & ClimateThe summer months ( March to mid June ) are hot and dry, with temperatures ranging from 42˚C in the day to 20˚C at night. Rains, if any, are sporadic, causing the grasses on the meadow to turn palce and parched. As the days get hotter, the rivers and nallahs begin to dry up. This water scarcity compels most animals, including the tiger, to concentrate near water areas. Hence, during the steaming months of May and June, it is not unusual to spot tigers lying in secluded pools, or to see elephants and wild boar wallowing in water or mud. This is also the time when many mammals, predators and prey alike, visit the salt licks to replenish their body stocks of vital minerals. A salt lick may be part of a hillside, a patch of earth or clay, orburied in the bed of a spring, lake, river or stream. Pre monsoons showers in the later June kill the heat and one can see massiv deer congregations in meadows. This coincide with the second peak of the chital ruttingseason, the first peak being from mid - April to mid May. Soon after the monsoon breaks in mid to late June, the parks are closed to visitors. The foliage becomes resplendent and lush with new growth, but it also makes animals difficult to spot. The climate is humid and wet, with temperature ranging from 20˚C to 30˚C. Also, as the rivers and nallahs are filled to bursting point, it encourages animals to disperse through the forest and makes sighting even harder. Rainfall : Heavy in the monsoon season (mid June to September) and average rainfall is 1400 mm. Best Time to visit Pench National Park : October to June when game viewing is at its best. |
